چکیده

A poison baiting operation at Trounson Kauri Park in Northland, New Zealand using first 1080 and then brodifacoum targeted possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rodents (Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus). Predatory mammals were monitored by radio telemetry during the operation. All six feral cats (Felis catus), the single stoat (Mustela erminea) and the single ferret (Mustela furo) being monitored at the beginning of the operation died of secondary poisoning following the 1080 operation. A further two cats and four stoats were monitored through the ongoing poisoning campaign using brodifacoum in a continuous baiting regime. None of these radio tagged carnivores died of secondary poisoning. However, tissue analysis of additional carnivores trapped at Trounson found that cats, weasels (Mustela nivalis) and, to a lesser extent, stoats did contain brodifacoum residues. The duration that the radio-tagged predators were alive in and around Trounson Kauri Park suggests that the secondary poisoning effect was much reduced under the continuous baiting strategy compared to the initial 1080 poison operation. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Seasonal abundance patterns and dietary preferences of hedgehogs at Trounson Kauri Park

The hedgehog has not been widely studied in the conservation context in New Zealand. As an introduced mammal, its role in New Zealand ecosystems is not well understood. Through the use of three years of trapping data from Trounson Kauri Park in Northland, and the analysis of 51 gut samples taken over a one-year period from Trounson, seasonal patterns of abundance and diet of hedgehogs were inve...

The Fate of Birds and Selected Invertebrates during a 1080 Operation

An aerial 1080 poison operation for possums at Waipoua Forest in spring 1990 applied cereal pellets lured with cinnamon. Numbers of brown kiwi, moreporks, fernbirds, kokako and common diurnal birds were monitored before, during and after the operation, while small numbers of insects and kauri snails were tested for 1080 uptake. Of the birds only blackbird and tomtit showed possible declines aft...

A descriptive spatial analysis of bovine tuberculosis in intensively controlled cattle farms in New Zealand.

We describe the temporal and geographical distribution of confirmed cases of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in a population of cattle in the south-east of the North Island of New Zealand. Data were derived from routine TB testing conducted between 1980 and 2003 and included details for 69 farms. Four six-year periods were defined to coincide with changes in depopulation strategies against the wildlif...

A review of the potential of fertility control to manage brushtail possums in New Zealand

Brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) were introduced into New Zealand from Australia in the mid-1800s and became a major invasive pest. They damage native biodiversity by browsing and predation, and they are a disease risk to the livestock industry by acting as vectors of bovine tuberculosis (TB). Management of possums includes their eradication from some offshore islands and control by tr...
